The exhibition Gravity Monster challenges the notion of gravity and explores the possibilities to break away from it. Gravity Monster is based on the unravelling of small and wonderful things of the everyday. The grey and the mundane are traditionally challenging. Getting tired in the evening signifies the death of the day. A conscious effort to find something positive in these moments, and to let imagination take its course, brings more shades to the grey. The notion of gravity is repeated in several of the works in the exhibition: In one of the works a scarf is escaping gravity through the energy it receives from static electricity; in another a window reflection creates an illusion of things hovering. The latter is only possible with the aid of a black cloth, which does not reflect light and is hence invisible in the glass. Blackness functions as a pedestal that lifts the reflected objects into the air.
I adjusted the gallery space by building a wall in front of the windows and by creating a long corridor on the side of the wall. The modification enhanced the dramatic qualities of the space, and created more darkened areas for the light-sensitive work and for the accompanying video projection. The exhibition started with the video Black Hole. The looped video was playing around the clock and could be viewed from the street at night.

There is a picture of a room with a black circle or hole on the wall. A person is throwing black objects and clothes into the hole. For a moment it seems like the items are disappearing into the darkness, but instead pulled by gravity, dropping on the floor .
Stepping into the Academy of Fine Arts’ Gallery space, one can see a small wooden structure in the corridor, with a foot spa machine underneath it, and a camera-like device on top of it. The foot spa is programmed to turn on occasionally, which then makes the water in the spa vibrate.Following the corridor further on reveals a hole in the wall. Peeking through the hole one can watch a dream-like video projection: A small, white shape in the middle of vibrating water, accompanied by a sunset-coloured background.
A room opens up on the left hand side. The exterior of this self-made room is clean and painted white. On the other side of the wall, structures and supporting beams have been left visible. The wall creates a storage-like background for the artwork, and empty cardboard and wooden boxes are arranged in front of it. The boxes are carelessly piled and tilting.
On the other side of the room, there are piles of black fabric and each of these piles has a colourful top. Scattered amongst the fabrics, there are fruits and vegetables: apples, carrots and bananas. The fabrics are brightly lit. A wooden structure holding up a glass panel is located in the middle of the fabrics and the boxes. A chair is posited next to the glass. By sitting on the chair the viewer is able to see how the empty boxes are suddenly filled with all the riches; through the reflection the fabrics and the fruits are transferred into them.

Gravity monster is a video of a white scarf that has been charged by the static electricity. A hand coming from above is feeding pieces of wool to the “hungry” scarf. The scarf is moving towards the hand until becoming electric enough. The hand continues as long as the scarf has strength to hold the threads. Electric charge discharges slowly and fluffy scarf turns into flat one towards the end.

If the connection between the projection and the foot spa does not become clear whilst watching the video, the viewer can still make the link when she/he is leaving the space and has to pass the works again on her/his way out. The camera, located on top of the wooden structure, is sending a signal to the room: It ‘sees’ a form in the foot spa that looks like Taj Mahal.

sand, video projector, light
Sand has been spread on the floor and there is a smallish form rising from it. The upper body of a fictitious character is projected onto the form. It looks as if the person has bandages on his face. He is babbling to himself in English. The monologue is an over six-minute-long story and tells about a person who felt invincible and god-like. His creativity was over-flowing and he was constantly sketching new worlds. However, the character’s belief in his own might was replaced by his growing self-doubt, which in the end resulted in his collapse. He became an ordinary man with a broken mind.
